IOTA is in beta state, it is expected things to not work smoothly now. Also there was much work to be done to structure the Foundation, that was not expected by the team and this delayed all things in the beginning of the year. Actually in this field it is accepted that it is much more important to manage the delays than to prevent them, they are often inevitable.

We have to assume people with lots of resources will try to bring the tangle to a halt once the coordinator is removed. fixing an addon won't fix the problem in the core that allows addons to bring down the tangle in the first place. I am unsure if that is what you meant with your last sentence, but if you ask me there is something wrong with the core since - like you said - Nelson is not part of the core.
